Supporting Communication - Embracing Uniqueness

Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity is the idea that differences in how people think, learn, and process the world are natural variations of the human brain.

AUTISM

What is Autism?

Autism is a natural and lifelong way that some children experience the world. It can affect how they communicate, connect with others, process sensory input, and play or move. Autistic children might communicate differently - through gestures, sounds, echolalia, or other unique patterns of speech - and they may prefer routines, have strong interests, or interact in ways that are different from what some people expect.

As a Speech and Language Therapist I know that these differences aren't problems to be fixed - they're a part of what makes each child unique.

My role is to support every child in expressing themselves in the ways that work best for them, helping them build confidence, connection, and communication on their terms.

Autistic children don't need to be changed - they need to be understood, accepted, and celebrated for who they are.

ATTENTION DIFFERENCES

What is ADHD?

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a natural and common way that some children's brains are wired. It affects how they focus, manage energy, handle big feelings and stay organized.

Children with ADHD may move a lot, have trouble sitting still, get distracted easily or jump from one idea to the next - but they're also often imaginative, curious, energetic and full of unique ideas.

As a Speech and Language Therapist, I understand that these differences can show up in how children communicate, interact with others and succeed in school settings. My job is not to make children with ADHD act more "typical" but to support their communication and social development in ways that build on their strengths, support their needs and honour who they are. With the right tools and understanding, children with ADHD can thrive - and feel proud of the way their minds work.

LEARNING DIFFERENCES

What is dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia?

Dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia are learning differences that affect how some children's brains process language, numbers and written expression. These are not signs of laziness or lack of intelligence - in fact, children with these learning profiles are often bright, creative thinkers with unique problem-solving skills.

Dyslexia can make reading and spelling challenging, often involving difficulty with decoding, phonological awareness, and recognizing written words, even when a child has strong thinking and listening skills.

Dyscalculia involves difficulty understanding numbers, maths concepts, and patterns.

Dysgraphia affects handwriting, spelling ad organizing thoughts on paper.

As a Speech and Language Therapist, I recognize that these differences can impact how children communicate and learn in the classroom - but it is not something to "fix".

My goal is to support each child's communication and literacy development in ways that work for them, while celebrating their strengths and building confidence.

Every child deserves to feel capable, understood, and supported in the ways they learn best.
